Which version of Centos did you install (when Boxslots was still running)? I couldn't get DNS to work, and ended up switching to Ubuntu, because I was more familiar with fixing those kind of problems in it (DNS still wasn't working automatically, but I was able to mess around with named and get it running on Ubuntu)

Of course, the tutorial didn't work on Ubuntu, & I'd be happy to switch back, as soon as I was back in control of the OS.

On the plus side, BoxSlots gave a huge bump in hard drive space, which was nice, but on the down side, they apparently didn't have a viable business plan, so they've gone under.

Now InstantDedicated has a chance to keep some of my business, as they've claimed that they won't change the prices or configurations from BoxSlots, but their control panel is so basic, that it is of little help, and their website is under construction, so there doesn't seem to be any way to open a ticket with them except via email. To their credit, they aren't billing anyone yet, but at some point they will have to, or they'll go out of business too...

And I need to get better control of my VPS - SolusVM control panel was really nice!

I also switched over to a boxslots.com account and so far it's alright. I have not been using it very much, but I'm getting s pretty sizable space for a slightly higher price. I'm running CentOS5 and didn't have any issues re-running the guide as it is now (aside from having to run each command on it's own line, but that may just be my fault or an option I don't know about.)

If Knowin get's back up I'll definitely be switching back :3

This just in from Glenn of KnowinServers.net:

The site looks like you're "putting the band back together", but when I tried checking out & paying, I got this message from PayPal:

"This recipient is currently unable to receive money."

Are you back, and is there anything you can do to accept PayPal?

Thanks,

Allen
(A former knowinserver.com & rapidspeeds.com customer)
Hello Allen,
Yes we are getting knowinServers back.
But Please provide us some more time to settle with the servers and the site.

Thank You
On the Boxslots front, I've now had them reload to Centos6, and have no DNS on the box, but I don't yet know if it is their problem, or a failure on my part, & I can't go through the tutorial to even try it until I can resolve the mirror repositories from the shell.

I have no problems ssh to the box, though (I can get into, but can't get out of box).

I got no response from knowingservers via email so far, & although I know it is Sunday here in the US, & that they may be very busy with bailing out former RapidSpeeds clients, I've gone on to order a VPS with boxslots.com for now.

I've no idea how long their setup takes, but they offer much more disk space than anyone else for the price that I've seen so far. I got a monthly box to try it and see if it works, and if so, I'll probably swap it for a 6-month or annual contract to get some lower rates.

They deal in British pounds, so I think it cost me about $36 for one month of their NL-E750 systems with these specs:

NL-E750
Intel Xeon E3-1240 - 1 x 3.30 GHz
1 GB Dedicated RAM
2 GB Burstable RAM
750 GB Disk Space
100Mbit Dedicated Connection
Unlimited Bandwidth
Free Dedicated IP address
SolusVM Control Panel

I am not familiar with the SolusVM Control Panel, so I don't know if it is near as fancy as the old RapidSpeeds Control Panel, (which would be nice for reboots or reloads), but at this point, I'd be happy with shell access. You choose your OS when you place the order, & I don't know if you can change that yourself later or not.

I'll keep you all posted with what I find out. Even if KnowingServers does return, it will be hard to walk away from 750 Gb of disk space to fit into 60 Gb or so...

Apparently, after RapidSpeeds' demise, Glenn is trying to put KnowinServers back online, but under knowinservers.net right now, until they can get their .com domain back...

I am only reporting what I've been able to read/find out from digging, but have no official confirmation that they've really gone back into business. Their shopping cart will allow me to place an order, but I haven't yet committed a purchase to find out if it really works.

I am also considering boxslots.com too, and would really like to find out from KnowinServers if they are back before making a decision, if possible.

I've been able to back up everything important from my old RapidSpeeds box, and don't have any burning emergencies that require I move quickly, just a desire to go there soon for convenience sake, so I'm not spending Xmas holiday working on getting servers set up (again)...

Ditto! I got caught flat-footed on this one too, and am looking for a good replacement for a VPS provider too. Thankfully, I do have the grace period to scramble and try to grab my data, but it has been a rough few days since RapidSpeeds baled out.

Does anyone know how to contact the original KnowinServers folks to see if they are going back into business? They were pretty good for what I needed before...

I did not have horrible experience with Rapidspeeds...until now.

Rapidspeeds has (according to their bandwidth/service provider LeaseWeb) dissolved it's operations as of November 28th 2011. LeaseWeb has explicitly stated it WILL NOT be taking over Rapidspeeds services (mostly because it seems like they do not offer VPS) which is counter to what Rapidspeeds tweeted.

Much like the switch from Knowin, I don't think anyone saw this coming. Rapidspeeds had a horrible response to whatever issue they were having, though: first they claimed the outage was from DDoS before finally giving everyone the ol' heave ho. I've still recieved no information about the end of the company from Rapidspeeds; their only apparent point of contact is Twitter. I learned most of this today though LeaseWeb's email.

LeaseWeb is handling this very well, giving users a final half a week of uptime before destroying the server. So heads up to anyone still with Rapidspeeds, your uptime ends on Dec. 2nd.

So on behalf of everyone that's now been completely left out in the cold after sticking with their Knowin accounts, does anyone know a good seedbox VPS provider? :)

Anything you had on the old servers is now lost and not likely to be recovered.

Rapidspeeds doesn't seem to be too responsive to KnowinServers customers about many things - I only had 2 of them, and I'm canceling one, because the add-ons I'd paid for with KnowinServers didn't get transferred. I'd opened a ticket on it, and the response I got was that they *did* transfer my add-ons, although my records show I paid for a 512 Mb RAM upgrade that has never shown up on one, and a 200 Gb hard drive add-on that hasn't shown up on the other...

Good luck, and post back if you find a better host.
